March 2013 - What a great turn out - thanks everyone for coming.
Bruce Oliver gave us a tour of some of the wines and vineyards from an area of Australia that he knows very well, the Macedon Ranges in Victoria. This region just to the north of Melbourne is the mainland’s coolest wine-growing region with an ideal climate for grapes like chardonnay, shiraz and pinot noir. It is gaining a reputation for some of Australia’s best boutique wineries.
We tried some quality wines that you definitely won’t find on the supermarket shelves including a fizzy red!
Here is some more information about the wines and the all important scores.
Feb 2013 - This wine club event was really interesting. We compared wines from Aldi and Lidl with wines from Waitrose and M&S. There were 4 'challenges'.
1 > Aldi beat M&S
2 > Lidl beat Waitrose
3 > Wairrose beat Lidl
4 > Aldi beat Waitrose.
And Aldi and Lidl wines were at least £2.30 cheaper than the alternatives.
So go try some wines from Aldi and Lidl as they are better than you might think.
Here are the detailed results.
Dec 2012 - For this wine tasting evening local wine merchant Brackley Wines were our hosts. Brackley Wines is an independent family business established in 2010. The company works with suppliers in London and Birmingham to provide interesting and enjoyable wines from all over the world. You may also know that Brackley Wines has close links with Brackley Deli. Together they do many wine tasting events, and the wine bar serves great wines and fresh food every Saturday night. So our Christmas tasting evening was all about wines to go with flavoursome Christmas food.
Oct 2012 - Unusual wines from around the world - Alistair Cooper from Wines Unfurled (http://www.winesunfurled.co.uk/) shared a selection of wines that can be considered to be “off the beaten track”. Some wines came from emerging countries and others had unusual grape varieties from established regions. He has run wine tastings for us in the past and has always proved to be a lively and interesting presenter.
Here are the scores.
July 2012 - Thank you to everyone who came to our “Wines from the Commonwealth” wine tasting in July. Majestic Wines in Banbury rose to the challenge of picking out a selection of wines for us to try. The highlights included a surprisingly good English rose (perfect for summer), a classic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc made exclusively for Majestic, and a South African pinotage (ideal for the barbecue).
May 2012 Members Choice -Croughton WAG enjoyed an evening where the wines were all requests from the group. This meant the range of wines we sourced were very diverse and included a red from Germany and a white from Lebanon.
Our favourite wine of the evening was the South Africal Bochendal scoring 3.5 which is available from Waitrose.
