Below is a record of the 2008/2009 year containing results from the 6 meetings.
March 2009 including AGM
The March event was one of our most popular and included a short AGM that followed the AGM agenda. It was also our last event for this membership year and all committee members were re-elected to continue their efforts for the next year.
Thank you to all that attended any or all of the six meetings held from April 2008 to March 2009. It's been a pleasure for the Committee to plan these events for you and we hope you're learning more and more about wine and are looking forward to seeing you at the next event in May.
After the AGM we sampled wines from Eastern Europe and lesser known wines from Spain. You can find the tasting scores below and also the presentations from the evening:
Thank you to all those who trekked through the snow to the Croughton Wine Appreciation Group's "Blind leading the blind!" event on the 6th of February, which was our 5th event. Our wine group has been in existence for nearly a year now and at each event we get an opportunity to taste some interesting wines (some better than others!), learn a bit about wine from different parts of the world and have a fun night out. And our February event was no exception. Jamie had done some great research into Italian wines and had picked four interesting and unusual varieties for us to try. And we had great fun with a quiz and a blind tasting, just to prove how much we've learned as a group over the past months. Well done to our winners - Pamela Gelder who got the highest score in the quiz; and in the blind tasting Brenda Reeves who came top and Sally Ward who was just pipped to the post and got the runner-up prize. Congratulations - you've obviously been doing a lot of studying! You'll find details on the website below of the wines we tasted on the night together with our group scores – you'll also find the prices which we forgot to mention on the night.

Well, December's Christmas event hosted by Waitrose was a real success and was one of our best ever a great way to begin the festive season with Domaine Pouderouz Maury Vendange Tardive 2002 from France being our highest scorer so far. Waitrose kindly supplied the wine for the evening so that the members were able to enjoy some festive snacks to match the food for the price of entry. The scores and flyer for this event can be found below.
We had another great event on the 26th of September which was hosted by Ryan Sutherland from SH Jones Ltd of Banbury. The event involved tasting some great wines from the northern and southern hemispheres and helped further build on the knowledge that the Croughton Wine Appreciation Group members are starting to gather.
"Ryan joined SH Jones in late 2006. He has extensive knowledge and experience in the wine industry, from working a number of vintages and winemaking both in New Zealand and France, to running an independently owned retail and corporate fine wine merchant in New Zealand. Ryan has a diploma in Viticulture, Food and Wine. Ryan's position is a new one in SH Jones, created to meet our corporate clients own unique set of requirements which we believe demanded a dedicated and professional SH Jones contact. Ryan has a real enthusiasm for all elements of the industry and we know our customers will enjoy working with him."
Please see the attached the scores for the tastings: September event 3 - 'North versus South' tasting scores.
On June 13th the Croughton Wine Appreciation Group had a great success with its second meeting. The event was a tutored tasting evening exploring Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. The evening was hosted by special guests Bill and Victoria, holders of the Diploma in Wine from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust. Bill and Victoria kept everybody entertained and educated with their stories and tuition. Hopefully all our members and guests now know how to taste wine the professional way! All the details of the last event will be on the Wine Appreciation Group area on the village website. A big thank you goes to Bill and Victoria for making it such an entertaining evening. The final scores are below. Bill and Victoria also provided us with an excellent Overview of Wine which is provide for you all below.

The original discussions regarding whether people in the village wanted a Wine Appreciation Group took place in early 2008. As part of that discussion meeting, members took part in a quiz as seen below with answers marked up, you will also see a copy of the minutes from that event for information and the results of what members hoped the group would do.
